What you might find on our beaches
Kelp – Over the autumn months we ask people to look out for kelp on our beaches. If you see any kelp please enter your finding on the Kelp recording scheme app ran by The Sussex Kelp Recovery Project.
Egg cases – You will also find cat shark and Ray egg cases washed up on our beaches. We ask that you report these finding to the Shark trust who are completing citizen science about the numbers in the UK.
Cuttlefish eggs – In the Summer Months (May to August) we ask you to look out for washed up cuttlefish eggs (see photo) on our shores. When the kelp beds were there the cuttlefish used to attach their eggs to the kelp but now they wash up on to the beaches. If left there they will die. So we ask if people find them please return them to the sea safely at low tide.
Squid eggs – also wash up on beaches in the summer months. These can also be returned to the sea at low tide.
Rock pool treasures – in the spring and summer months. Share them with us on our facebook page.
